As video games have evolved from a casual pastime into a cultural phenomenon, their immersive nature and accessibility have brought both joy and challenges. While gaming offers entertainment and social connectivity, excessive gaming—classified as “video gaming addiction” or “gaming disorder” in some cases—can lead to significant mental and physical health concerns, particularly for adolescents and young adults.

My own son suffered both emotionally and physically during the most severe stage of his gaming addiction. He was fragile, had lost significant weight, had developed extreme facial tics, his hand tremors were increased, he had insufficient vitamin and mineral intake, and was suffering with severe anxiety and depression.

Many of the gamers I coach do not believe this addiction can have a detrimental effect on their health over time. But we do know now that this is untrue.

Let’s go through the health risks for those struggling with disordered gaming and screen time.

Increased Anxiety and Depression

Studies have shown that adolescents who spend excessive hours gaming are at a higher risk of developing symptoms of depression and anxiety. A 2019 study published in Computers in Human Behavior found a significant correlation between problematic gaming and mental health challenges.

Poor Emotional Regulation

Gaming addiction often disrupts the development of healthy coping mechanisms. When young gamers use gaming as a primary escape from stress or emotional discomfort, they may struggle to manage emotions effectively with in-person situations. Many addicted gamers have difficulty managing emotions, which can lead to meltdowns, despondency, and/or volatile behaviour, especially when the threat of reducing or removing screen time.

Impaired Academic and Cognitive Performance

Excessive gaming can impair attention spans, reduce academic achievement, and limit critical thinking skills. A 2024 study by the National Library of Medicine highlighted that students addicted to gaming often prioritize games over academic responsibilities, leading to a decline in educational outcomes.

Sedentary Lifestyle and Obesity

Gaming for extended periods often results in physical inactivity, increasing the risk of obesity and related health issues such as diabetes and cardiovascular problems. Eating junk food at gaming consoles or skipping meals, and lack of exercise all contribute to weight loss or gain. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable as they require regular physical activity for healthy growth and development.

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)

Prolonged use of controllers, keyboards, and mice can cause repetitive strain injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome. These conditions are increasingly being seen in young gamers who spend hours on end playing.

Sleep Deprivation

Late-night gaming sessions often disrupt sleep patterns, leading to chronic sleep deprivation. Sleep is critical for the physical and cognitive development of adolescents, and inadequate sleep can exacerbate mood disorders, reduce academic performance, and lower immunity.

Eye Strain and Vision Problems

Staring at screens for long periods can cause digital eye strain, leading to symptoms such as dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. Over time, excessive screen use can contribute to myopia (nearsightedness), a growing concern among adolescents worldwide.

Beyond individual health concerns, gaming addiction can strain family relationships, reduce time spent on meaningful social interactions, and foster difficulties in forming and maintaining real-life friendships. The virtual connections provided by gaming often lack the depth and support of in-person relationships.

Video gaming is not inherently harmful, and for many, it serves as a source of joy and social connection. However, when gaming takes precedence over physical health, mental well-being, and in-person relationships, the consequences can be profound.

By fostering awareness, setting boundaries, and promoting healthy habits, we can help adolescents and young adults navigate the digital world responsibly and maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Parents, educators, coaches, and health professionals must work together to support young individuals, and create effective change in their lives that ensures their interaction with gaming becomes a positive aspect of their lives.
